How to Respond to a Suspected Gas Leak

In the unfortunate event of a suspected gas leak, immediate and decisive action is crucial for ensuring safety. First and foremost, prioritise your safety and that of others around you.

What to do if you smell gas or suspect a gas leak at home?

  • Ensure gas appliances are turned off and have not been left on and unlit
  • Don’t smoke, vape, or use a naked flame
  • Don’t unplug or switch anything electrical on or off
  • Open windows and doors
  • If the smell persists, turn off the gas at the meter.
  • Evacuate the premises immediately — do not attempt to locate the source of the leak yourself.

Once you are safely outside, contact emergency services or your gas supplier without delay. It’s essential to report any suspected gas leaks to Gas Networks Ireland immediately by calling their emergency number 1800 20 50 50. Do not use a phone near the leak; instead, use a neighbour’s phone or call from a safe distance.

What should I do if I suspect a gas or LPG leak before the engineer arrives?

If you smell gas (rotten egg odour), hear hissing near a gas line, or the meter is still flowing when all appliances are off, evacuate the area immediately, open windows, do not operate switches or appliances, and call Gas networks immediately.
